The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded in 1901 and is now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST is one of the nation‘s oldest physical science laboratories. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework helps businesses of all sizes better understand, manage, and reduce their cybersecurity risk and protect their networks and data and the five core functions are Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. NIST is responsible for developing standards and guidelines, including minimum requirements, and for providing adequate information security for all agency operations and assets, but such standards and guidelines shall not apply to national security systems.

NIST also has a voluntary framework called the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) that helps businesses of all sizes manage and reduce their cybersecurity risk. The CSF is a set of guidelines and best practices that can be used to:

  1. Prevent cyberattacks
  2. Detect cyberattacks
  3. Respond to cyberattacks
  4. Prioritize cybersecurity investments and decisions
  5. Implement recovery planning processes and procedures
  6. Implement improvements based on lessons learned
  7. Coordinate internal and external communications
